Patrick H. Kalen, PLS (AK Lic. # LS-4603) Mr. Kalen is firm president and in responsible charge of all projects performed by Kalen & Associates, Inc. A life-long Alaskan from Skagway, Mr. Kalen received his higher education from the University of Alaska. He has been a registered Land Surveyor in Alaska since 1978 and a U.S. Mineral Surveyor since 1980. A leader in the profession, Mr. Kalen is serving his third 4-year term as a Land Surveyor on the Alaska Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors. Mr. Kalen brings over 25 years of experience in all phases of land and construction surveying, with particular emphasis on GPS, topographic and hydrographic, and construction surveys in support of civil projects. Recent projects have involved complex field design for roads, highways, airport, and housing developments. He also has been responsible for numerous control, boundary, and route surveys, including GPS surveys in urban and remote locations. He has performed several original cadastral surveys and large state agricultural subdivision projects and retracements, and has been Project Manager for subdivision and road design and survey for state and municipal agencies, and private clients. Mr. Kalen brings expertise in planning and supervising large-scale road, electric line, and river surveys in summer and winter conditions, with snowmachine, ATV, helicopter and small boat support, and remote camp logistics.
Susan K. Kalen, CEO/Secretary-Treasurer : Administrative Supervisor Mrs. Kalen holds a B.A. degree from the University of Arizona and an M.A. degree from Stanford University. She is one of the original founders of the firm and has been CEO since 1985, with 51% of the corporate ownership. She is in charge of financial decisions and corporate policy, and is active in procurement and bidding, negotiations, and scheduling. She handles the day- to-day business and financial operations for the firm. With a strong background in English, she is responsible for all word processing, and has experience in preparation of contract documents, technical specifications, permitting applications, BLM Field Notes, proposals, and meeting reports.
